Discover the secrets of Mysterious Santarcangelo

Santarcangelo is much more than what meets the eye!
Beneath the streets of the town we walk through every day lies a secret that not everyone knows: a second, underground city made up of as many as 160 caves, tunnels and passageways.

But what were these caves used for?
When were they created? Who dug them?
And what is the meaning behind the so-called Monumental Caves?

You can find out by joining the Mysterious Santarcangelo Tour: the underground city. A journey back in time, through a kind of labyrinth, where history, legends and curiosities come together in a truly one-of-a-kind story.

The caves can only be visited with a guided tour, which you can book by filling in the form below or by contacting the Santarcangelo Pro Loco Tourist Information Office (IAT).

USEFUL INFO

BOOKING

Booking is always required to confirm the guided tour on your preferred day and time, and it is mandatory for large groups or foreign-language groups (English, French, Spanish or German).

TOUR DURATION

About 50 minutes for the guided tour of the Public Cave + Casamatta.
1 hour and 15 minutes for the Private Cave and the Public Cave.

* For groups: to make your tour even more special, you can add a visit to the private Felici cave, a small and fascinating secret hidden in the heart of the medieval town. In addition, if the group is small and weather permits, a free visit to the Casamatta, in the Piazza Balacchi archaeological area, is included.

STARTING POINT

Payment for the tour is made at the Pro Loco IAT office at Via Battisti 5, the starting point of the visit. This location is within the town’s limited traffic zone.
We recommend checking this page for useful tips on parking and the best days to visit the town.

WHAT TO WEAR

We suggest wearing comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing: inside the caves the temperature is a constant 13°C or so.

TOURS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Booking well in advance is essential to guarantee a guide for foreign-language groups, especially smaller ones. In any case, you will be given a QR code to scan to download an audio guide, available in English, French or German. Headphones are not included.

WHO IT'S SUITABLE FOR

The tour is suitable for all age groups, with a few important notes:
1) The route through the archaeological area is not accessible by wheelchair or stroller (access to the public cave itself is possible).
2) Since it is a small space that is not easy to access, it is not suitable for large groups or people with reduced mobility.
3) Dogs are generally allowed, if small-to-medium sized and calm-natured.
